The scoop on Tulip Sylvestris

Buttercup yellow flowers the size of a silver dollar, with a wild and wavy feel . . . Sylvestris adds a welcome sense of movement to the garden. The blooms are held aloft on slender black stems that help the flowers, often 3 to 7 per stem, follow the sun.

Why Grow Species Tulips?

  • Species tulips are non-hybridized varieties, natural little beauties that are identical to their cousins still growing out in the wild
  • These determined plants survive in tough terrain - rocky hillsides in Turkey, Syria, Greece, Northern Africa, Lebanon, Jordan and Mongolia
  • Species tulips are long lived and happiest with plain soil and non-diva treatment
  • Plant these smaller tulips in generous groupings; they tend to look best in clumps rather than formal rows

If you've seen a yellow tulip brightening the edge of the woodlands at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home, it was this one, Sylvestris.
