The scoop on Tulip Saxatilis

Softly hued pink-violet petals, brilliant yellow centers and a cluster forming habit that will translate into more flowers with each passing spring - lots to love about this little wildling tulip. Saxatilis is a sister to Lilac Wonder; see the resemblance?

Why Grow Species Tulips?

  • Species tulips are non-hybridized varieties, natural little beauties that are identical to their cousins still growing out in the wild
  • These determined plants survive in tough terrain - rocky hillsides in Turkey, Syria, Greece, Northern Africa, Lebanon, Jordan and Mongolia
  • Species tulips are long lived and happiest with plain soil and non-diva treatment
  • Plant these smaller tulips in generous groupings; they tend to look best in clumps rather than formal rows

Native to the island of Crete, this tulip reproduces with stolons, roots that run sideways and sprout here and there. Saxatilis is happiest where it gets a good baking; it's winter hardy in zones 3-4 but really thrives where soils get good and warm.
