The scoop on Siberian Iris Ruffled Velvet

This Dr. McEwen creation is a tetraploid, with larger flowers, stronger stems and a more velvety texture than previous Siberians. Ruffled Velvet was created as part of the ground breaking work by McEwen, a medical doctor and N.Y.U. Dean, who dedicated the later third of his life to iris breeding. Working on a three acre homestead in Maine, overlooking the ocean, he created thousands of crosses and eventually introduced 160 new cultivars. Ruffled Velvet has supplied genetics for dozens of additional iris introductions.

Why Grow Siberian Irises?

  • Siberian iris display beautifully intricate, open face blooms
  • These irises mature to large flowering clumps
  • Not on the favorite foods list for deer
Ruffled Velvet won the Morgan-Wood Metal, the highest award bestowed by the American Iris Society. A big thumbs up from people who know all there is to know about irises.
