Peony Duchesse de Nemours was introduced in 1856; its loose, double flowers are perfect for cutting and its fragrance, likened to that of lily of the valley, made it a huge hit then. The Duchesse is still popular. A vigorous variety, a long bloomer with lots of side buds and a beauty. Oh, and a bargain. (Think 50+ years of fabulous spring flowers.)
Peony Duchesse de Nemours blooms early in the peony season, which for most is in May. This peony has earned the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society of Britain.
