For brewmasters crafting their own specialty beers, fresh ingredients are essential. The best way to get the freshest hops is to harvest your own homegrown from vines out back. The three varieties below are found in many brews, especially IPAs, and are winter hardy to zone 5. The roots we offer are organically grown in Colorado, the brewing capital of the U.S. Hops begin to produce just enough berries to tease the first season, considerably more the second year and plenty to brew with by the third. (We harvested 14 hops berries from a half dozen plants the first year and felt like rock stars!)
Don't brew? Grow hops to soften the edges of fences and arbors. Trim aggressively in fall and wrap the cuttings into pretty circle wreaths. Chinook is a great choice for ornamental vines.
