Classic gladiolus are typically winter hardy in zone 8. With a protective covering of mulch zone 7 probably works and maybe even zone 6. But, if you garden in zone 5 – Chicago, Albany and Denver – you’ll have to dig your glads for a repeat performance.
Or . . . switch gears and plant shorter, tougher winter hardy glads. These cousins of the tall fancies happily sleep through snowy weather and resprout come spring. Tuck groups of 3 to 5 bulbs into perennial beds for color and cutting. Enjoy for years to come.
